The great blue heron (Ardea herodias), also known as the “crane of the marshes”, is one of the most widely seen birds across North America. With their long S-shaped necks and distinctive grey-blue feathers, these birds are a sight to behold!
The great blue heron has a wide range of habitats; from tidal flats, swamps, ponds and lakes to saltwater coastal shores. They feed primarily on fish and small aquatic creatures such as frogs, snakes, worms and other invertebrates. Great blue herons can be found individually or in groups, but tend to migrate south for the winter months.
